Chicago Woman Sues Over Bed Bugs

Chicago resident Leslie Fox, age 54, sued a New York resort after being repeatedly bitten by bed bugs. After three nights at the resort, Fox awoke to the realization that she was covered with hundreds of itchy, burning bug bites. Her husband also was bitten, but nowhere near as many times as Mrs. Fox. In a statement to the press, she described the pain of the bites as an uncontrollable fiery sensation that made her want to rip her skin off.

Fox and her husband even found a squashed bed bug engorged with blood in their mattress, as well as bed bug excrement. The hotel where the Foxes stayed did offer them two free nights, but they declined. Leslie Fox is seeking millions of dollars in damages for pain and suffering that she experienced from the hundreds of bug bites.

So how common is something like this? More common than you might think. After the second World War, bed bugs practically disappeared from our society. Improved sanitation and the pesticide DDT had a big role in the elimination of these pests which have plagued people for thousands of years. However, DDT was banned because it was discovered to be unsafe, and many new pesticides after it were simply not as effective. Also, more international travel and immigration greatly contributed to our society's current bed bug problem.

Bed bugs are prevalent in certain areas of places like Africa, Asia and South America, and can travel undetected in suitcases. This is how multitudes of these pests are reaching our shores. Bed bugs multiply quickly, and can easily spread from room to room. This makes them especially troublesome for the hotel industry, as treating hundreds of rooms for bed bug infestation can become quite costly.

Bed bugs can be tricky to get rid of, and most often always require the services of a professional exterminator that's experienced in dealing with these pests. How much this service will cost depends on the level of infestation and the methods used to get rid of it. For people concerned with fumes from hazardous pesticides, there are all natural remedies on the market that can be used to eliminate bed bugs. It's crucial to get rid of bed bugs as soon as they're discovered, especially for the hotel, motel and resort industries.
